In his role, Dr. Ferris will oversee Red Cell’s healthcare strategy, incubations, and investments. In addition to supporting existing founders of Red Cell incubations, he will also recruit and partner with entrepreneurs to create health-tech businesses aimed at addressing some of healthcare’s biggest challenges.

Dr. Ferris replaces Naimish Patel, who now assumes the role of Chief Growth Officer at the firm.

“I am excited to welcome Tim to Red Cell. As one of the world’s most eminent leaders in healthcare, Tim has spent his career working to reshape medicine — from how it’s organized, governed, and financed to how it operates — with the goal of maximizing the health benefits of those in need of care. That was especially evident during his tenure at NHS England, the largest publicly funded healthcare system in the world, where Tim accelerated frontline digitization, redesigning and deploying more efficient tech-enabled care services,” said Grant Verstandig, Red Cell’s Founder, CEO, and Chairman. “Tim now brings his three decades of experience to Red Cell to enable health-tech solutions that positively impact the healthcare system in America, increase access to affordable care, and improve patient outcomes so people can live longer, happier, healthier lives.”

“With approximately 18 percent of the U.S. population comprising individuals 65 years or older – a figure that’s expected to grow to 23 percent by 2054 – one of the most critical issues confronting the U.S. healthcare system today is its inability to meet the growing demand for care fueled by our aging population, provider shortages, and rapidly expanding diagnostic and therapeutic options,” said Dr. Ferris. “These are just some of the issues that I have devoted my career to tackling; therefore, coming to Red Cell is a natural extension of the work I’ve been doing for 30 years. I’m excited to now be part of Red Cell and to work with the team to build companies and to introduce advanced technologies that will not only solve these issues and more, but that will also cement Red Cell’s position as a major player in the transformation of the United States healthcare system.”

Before joining Red Cell, Dr. Ferris spent three years at NHS England, serving as its inaugural National Director of Transformation. In that role, he functioned as the organization’s chief digital officer responsible for care improvement infrastructure, technology and data strategy and services, biotech innovation, and life sciences research. With an annual budget of 2 billion pounds, Dr. Ferris’s team improved NHS operations by expanding and expediting data feeds throughout the country, enabling real-time dashboards for leadership, reporting on comparative productivity variation, and facilitating predictive analytics. In addition, he expanded the services available on the NHS App to more than two-thirds of the 60 million people living in England and supported the launch of the NHS home hospital program, adding 10,000 additional beds to the NHS over a two-year period.

Prior to his role at the NHS, Dr. Ferris was the CEO of the Mass General Physicians Organization where he oversaw 3,000 Harvard faculty physicians. Previously, he served as the Senior Vice President for Population Health at Mass General Brigham where he led the clinical and financial performance of one of the largest accountable care organizations in the United States. Additionally, he founded the Center for Population Health, an academic-industry partnership focused on using data analytics tools to improve the health of more than 1 million patients annually through targeted preventive services delivery. Dr. Ferris was also the founding board chair of Codametrix, an AI-based healthcare coding company now deployed in more than 20 health systems for automating physician billing costs. In addition, he has held past roles on multiple committees at the National Academy of Medicine and has received NIH grant funding; co-authored more than 150 publications on healthcare quality measurement, health disparities, and health IT; and has received the National Patient Safety Socius Award as well as the Harvard Medical School Mentoring Award. Dr. Ferris trained in medicine and public health at Harvard University, becoming a Professor of Medicine in 2018. He remains on staff at Mass General Hospital and currently provides advisory services and teaches several courses at Harvard and MIT.
