IDE Technologies Secures Landmark Desalination Project to Strengthen Mumbai’s Water Future
Manori seawater desalination plant to deliver 200 million liters of climate-resilient drinking water per day, with infrastructure designed to double capacity
KADIMA, Israel & MUMBAI, India--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IDE Technologies, a leading global provider of desalination and water treatment solutions, today announced it has been awarded a major Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to design and build a large-scale seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Manori, Mumbai. The project also includes a long-term operations and maintenance agreement, under which IDE will operate and maintain the facility for 20 years after commissioning, ensuring reliable delivery of high-quality drinking water to India’s financial capital.
Located on Mumbai’s western coastline, the Manori SWRO plant is planned to produce 200 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water in its initial phase, significantly enhancing the city’s water security amid rising demand and growing climate variability. The intake–outfall system and product water storage infrastructure will be constructed for an ultimate capacity of 400 MLD, enabling a future doubling of output with minimal disruption and optimized capital efficiency.
In executing the project, IDE will partner with GVPR Engineers Limited, an established Indian engineering and construction company, to deploy advanced, energy-efficient desalination technologies tailored to Mumbai’s coastal and urban conditions. The plant will draw seawater from an offshore intake several kilometers from the shoreline, using environmentally responsible design to help protect marine ecosystems while delivering a stable, drought-proof source of fresh water for decades to come.
“By combining IDE’s global leadership in seawater desalination with strong local execution capabilities, this flagship project will provide Mumbai with a resilient and sustainable new water source that is independent of monsoon variability,” said Alon Tavor, CEO, IDE Technologies Group. “Manori is not just another project; it is a strategic investment in Mumbai’s long-term water security and a powerful demonstration of what innovative, large-scale desalination can achieve for megacities under climate stress. It also underscores our long-term commitment to India, where we see desalination playing a pivotal role in addressing regional water challenges, safeguarding communities, and supporting India’s continued economic growth as one of the most dynamic markets in the world.”
“The Manori project is a significant addition to IDE’s growing portfolio of design-build-operate-maintain desalination projects in India, including our recently secured project serving SIPCOT in Tamil Nadu,” said Nayan Shah, Director – Sales & Marketing, IDE India. “Together, these initiatives bring world-class desalination expertise closer to Indian cities and industries, helping to deliver reliable, high-quality water supplies at a competitive cost while keeping sustainability and environmental stewardship at the core of every decision.”
