Mark Mader to Retire as CEO Following Nearly 20 Years of Leading Smartsheet

SaaS Industry Veteran Sunny Gupta Will Assume the Role of Executive Chair and Acting CEO

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smartsheet, the AI-powered enterprise-grade work management platform, today announced that, following nearly two decades at the helm of Smartsheet, Mark Mader will retire as CEO and from the Board of Directors at the end of September.

Software industry veteran Sunny Gupta will assume the role of Executive Chair and Acting CEO. In this role, Gupta will provide strategic oversight and operational support as the company drives its next phase of innovation, growth, and operational excellence. Mader will remain with the company as an advisor and work closely with Gupta to ensure a smooth transition. Smartsheet’s Board has initiated a comprehensive search to identify a new CEO.

Gupta brings more than 20 years of pioneering experience scaling high-growth software businesses. From 2007 to 2024, Gupta served as CEO of Apptio, which he co-founded and helped build into the world’s largest technology spend and value management software providers that was eventually acquired by IBM in 2023. He previously held leadership roles at Opsware, iConclude, and Rational Software.
