Understanding the Risks of Lithium-Ion Batteries and How Insurance Can Protect Against Fire-Related Losses

COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on daily. However, improper use and storage of these rechargeable batteries can lead to serious fire hazards, causing property damage and safety concerns.

Grange Insurance offers tips on how to protect your home and vehicle from lithium-ion battery fires.

Kim Bowser, Vice President of National Product Development & Experience Development at Grange, emphasizes the importance of proper battery usage and understanding insurance coverage in the event of battery-related fires.

“As lithium-ion battery technology becomes more common, the risk of fire incidents also rises,” says Bowser. “Educating consumers on safe charging practices and ensuring they have the right insurance coverage is crucial.”

Understanding the Risks of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion battery fires can occur due to several factors, including:

  • Overcharging and overheating – Leaving devices plugged in for too long can cause excessive heat buildup
  • Physical damage – Dropping or puncturing a battery may lead to internal short circuits
  • Improper storage – Keeping batteries in hot, humid or flammable environments can increase fire risks

How to Reduce the Risk of Battery Fires

To prevent battery-related incidents, Bowser recommends the following safety tips:

  • Always use the charger that came with the device to prevent overcharging
  • Charge devices on hard surfaces, not beds or couches, to allow proper airflow
  • Avoid leaving devices plugged in overnight unless they have a safe-charging feature
  • Store batteries and devices in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Inspect devices for signs of swelling, leakage, or excessive heat before use

Insurance Coverage for Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, Grange advises certain insurance policies may help cover the damage:

  • Auto Insurance – If a battery fire is caused by an accident, collision coverage may help repair or replace the vehicle
  • Home Insurance – Standard policies generally cover fire damage, but additional endorsements may be needed for battery-related losses

Grange encourages consumers to review their insurance policies and speak with their independent insurance agents to ensure they have the right protection in place.

As technology continues to evolve, being informed about lithium-ion battery safety and insurance coverage is more important than ever. To learn more about how to safeguard your home, vehicle, and personal belongings, contact a Grange independent insurance agent to learn more.
