Less Paperwork, More Connected Care: Humana and Epic Advance Data Sharing

Technology demonstration at CMS Connectathon showcases digital innovations that align with federal interoperability priorities and improve patient experience

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. [NYSE: HUM] today announced the broad activation of Epic’s Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange capabilities for its Medicare Advantage membership – marking a significant milestone in the shift toward digital-first, patient-centered care.

“These capabilities help us meet patients where they are – by simplifying check-in, ensuring accurate information, and making their experience smoother,” said Imran A. Andrabi, MD, President and CEO of Froedtert ThedaCare.

For more than 800,000 Humana Medicare Advantage members who receive care at about 120 different health systems, checking in at the doctor’s office is now simpler than ever. As additional providers adopt these capabilities, millions more patients could benefit. Coverage can be confirmed automatically in advance – no card, no paperwork, and no clipboard needed.

“These capabilities help us meet patients where they are – by simplifying check-in, ensuring accurate information, and making their experience smoother,” said Imran A. Andrabi, MD, President and CEO of Froedtert ThedaCare. “It’s an improvement that helps patients feel supported the moment they walk in, which directly aligns with our vision of being their trusted partner in health.”

The announcement builds on Humana and Epic’s joint pledge to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Health Technology Ecosystem, a White House-backed initiative aimed at eliminating outdated, paper-based processes and creating a patient-centric healthcare system. Humana and Epic were among the first 60 organizations to commit to this vision – now embraced by about 400 organizations nationwide. At last week’s CMS Connectathon in Washington, D.C., the two companies demonstrated these capabilities, showcasing how connections between payers and providers reduce administrative workload for healthcare staff and make life easier for patients as they seek care.

Both features are part of Epic’s Payer Platform, which enables Humana members’ insurance information – including coverage details and digital insurance cards – to be securely and automatically shared with healthcare providers using Epic. This eliminates the need for manual entry or physical cards at check-in, reduces administrative burden, and improves data accuracy.

“We’re proud to be among the first to bring these capabilities to life and demonstrate them directly to CMS,” said George Renaudin, President of Insurance at Humana. “This is more than a technology launch – it’s a step toward a more connected, efficient healthcare system that puts people first.”

Humana is actively encouraging its provider-partners using Epic to enable these capabilities for their patients.

“With Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange, more than a million patients have experienced easier check-ins," said Alan Hutchison, Vice President at Epic. "From reducing time at the front desk by up to 50% to ensuring their coverage is accurate and up to date, this makes insurance information one less thing patients need to worry about."

Key Benefits of the Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange Capabilities:

  • Automated Insurance Verification: Coverage details are available to providers before the patient arrives, so staff members don’t need to spend time manually entering information.
  • Streamlined Check-In: Members no longer need to present a physical insurance card – registration staff can use the digital card to check them in.
  • Reduced Errors and Delays: Automating coverage entry helps prevent mistakes and ensures smoother, more accurate billing.
  • Secure and Compliant: Data is exchanged using national interoperability standards that protect patient information and support CMS’s vision for a modernized healthcare infrastructure.

This broad activation complements the successful MyChart integration announced in July, which enabled Humana Medicare Advantage members to view health plan information directly within their MyChart accounts. Together, these innovations reflect Humana and Epic’s shared commitment to improving transparency, convenience and interoperability in healthcare.
