Avangrid’s PNW-Leading Solar Fleet Powers 130,000 Homes Annually, Growth Continues to Meet Surging Demand

Over 750 MWdc in solar capacity across Oregon and Washington

Fleet includes largest operating solar projects in Washington and Oregon by capacity

Projects help to reliably and affordably meet growing energy demand in the region

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, operates the largest solar energy fleet in the Pacific Northwest that currently generates enough electricity annually to power 130,000 American homes. Over the last five years, energy production from the company’s Northwest solar assets has increased each year, with growth projected to continue. This upward trend is representative of the company’s commitment to meeting growing power demand, supporting economic growth, and securing America’s energy future.

“As demand for electricity continues to surge across the country and in the Pacific Northwest, our growing solar fleet adds to our existing generation portfolio to deliver reliable power to homes and businesses while fueling local economies,” said Jose Antonio Miranda, Avangrid CEO. “These projects are more than energy infrastructure, they’re economic development engines that create jobs, support public services, and help communities thrive.”

Since 2017, Avangrid’s solar capacity has grown to over 750 MWdc in Oregon and Washington, with projects supporting local utilities and data centers. These projects generate reliable and affordable electricity at a time when demand is surging. For example, a September report from consulting firm Energy and Environmental Economics found that the region could face a resource gap of 9 GW by 2030, which is approximately the load of the state of Oregon.

These projects are also economic drivers in the communities they operate within, creating good-paying, union jobs for construction of the assets and long-term jobs for ongoing operations. Through the end of last year, Avangrid’s solar projects in the Northwest have paid a combined $9 million in taxes, supporting a variety of public services, especially schools.

Avangrid also contributes to local and regional economies through its partnership with a local rancher to graze sheep at many of its operating solar projects in Oregon and Washington. Known as solar grazing, the sheep excel at moving around solar panels to eat grass and weeds, limiting their growth and helping to cut down wildfire risk during hot, dry Pacific Northwest summers. Avangrid pioneered the utility-scale use of this vegetation management practice in the region, which supports the production of food and wool fiber in addition to energy generation.

Avangrid’s expanding solar fleet complements its other energy assets in the region, contributing to the company’s 3 GW of operating capacity in Oregon and Washington and reinforcing its position as a leading independent power producer. Additionally, Avangrid maintains a large corporate office in Portland, its National Training Center in Sherman County, Oregon, and its National Control Center in Vancouver, Washington.
