“The 2025 State of the Industry report is an important yardstick for life sciences and health innovation companies in Alberta. Despite a challenging investment climate, our sector continues to grow year-over-year. Life sciences accounts for 34,400 full time equivalent jobs in Alberta, generating $2.7billion in labour income for Albertans and contributing $4.8billion to Alberta’s GDP. This economic activity also contributes $1billion back to governments through federal, provincial and municipal revenue.”

- Robb Stoddard, President & CEO, BioAlberta

“MNP is excited to partner with BioAlberta on the latest edition of the State of the Industry report. With a highly educated workforce and a strong emphasis on research and development, Alberta's life sciences companies are well-positioned to lead the way in addressing complex health challenges and driving economic prosperity.”

- Susan Mowbray, Custom Research and Economic Insights Practice Lead, MNP

Key findings of the 2025 Report:

  • 1,900 organizations in the sector, including almost 1,000 companies focused on developing and commercializing new and innovative products
  • 34,000 total full-time equivalent jobs
  • $4.770 billion contribution to Alberta GDP
  • $2.705 billion generated in labour income

State of the Industry also includes a survey of life sciences executives, founders and entrepreneurs to gain insight into the top-of-mind issues facing the ecosystem. Key findings include:

  • 31% of companies identify as “emerging” while 46% consider themselves in a growth stage
  • Revenues for companies are primarily generated in Alberta, although export and expansion to the United States, Asia or United Kingdom are part of the growth plans
  • Labour attraction is a key challenge, with two-thirds of respondents reporting difficulties in filling executive and mid-level positions
  • 60% of respondents rate building a supportive environment for innovation and commercialization, including reducing regulatory burden, as “very important”
  • As companies prioritize digital transformation and AI-driven product development, heavy reliance on government programs remains. As companies reach the seed to series A phases and beyond, additional public funding and venture capital attraction must be a priority for the ecosystem.

The State of the Industry report is generated every two years to document the growth, opportunities and challenges facing the life sciences and health innovation sector. For a copy of the report, please visit www.bioalberta.com.
