“Higher education is confronting a period of profound uncertainty driven by political upheaval, economic transformation, and social change,” said Michael Riley, president and editor in chief of The Chronicle. “Brad’s deep knowledge of these challenges, along with his proven leadership experience and understanding of The Chronicle’s mission, make him the right editor to guide our newsroom through today’s disruption — and position us for the future.”
Wolverton brings a unique blend of continuity and transformation to the role. A former Chronicle journalist for a dozen years, he covered some of the most consequential stories in higher education. In the years since, he has broadened his impact in the digital space — guiding audience strategy, developing editorial talent, and championing ambitious journalism that resonates with modern audiences.
Before rejoining The Chronicle as editor, Wolverton led editorial strategy as a senior director and head of content for the software company HubSpot. At HubSpot, Wolverton built a 40-person team that produced business websites, podcasts, newsletters, and YouTube channels that reached 50 million viewers each month.
Prior to HubSpot, Wolverton oversaw the editorial team at The Hustle, a newsletter company later acquired by HubSpot. Before then, he led a group of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists at NerdWallet, where he helped expose abuses in consumer finance and expand the company’s reach.
Wolverton worked in The Chronicle’s newsroom as a reporter and editor, earning national recognition for his investigative coverage of money and power in college athletics. He is a graduate of Indiana University at Bloomington, where he majored in journalism.
Wolverton, who will also oversee The Chronicle Review and Arts & Letters Daily, assumes his role as editor of The Chronicle today.
“It’s a privilege to return to a newsroom that has always set the benchmark for independent journalism in higher education,” said Wolverton. “Colleges and universities are under siege, and I’m eager to lead a team so deeply committed to serving its readers with integrity and insight.”
