Viken Detection Unveils Portable Narcotics Analyzer to Combat the Fentanyl Epidemic

The Company That Revolutionized the Industry with its Nighthawk™ Handheld X-ray Imager Offers Another Essential Device, the Foxhound™ Narcotics Analyzer, for the Growing Threat of Synthetic-Narcotics

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Viken Detection, at the forefront of detection technologies for law enforcement and public safety agencies, today announced that following a successful limited release, the Foxhound™ Narcotics Analyzer is now broadly available to support interdiction efforts in combating drug trafficking.

The Foxhound embodies enhanced ion mobility spectrometry (e-IMS™) offering improved resolution, packaged in a compact form ideal for field deployment. Unlike laser-based Raman or FT-IR analyzers, the Foxhound is a flexible and fully AI/ML-enabled drug detection tool. It identifies lower concentrations of high-potency synthetic compounds, such as fentanyl, increasingly found in pills, powders, liquids and other mixed narcotics. Furthermore, the multifunctional analyzer detects both trace amounts and visible substances, regardless of the color and packaging, considerably enhancing the scope of counter-narcotic activities.

"At a recent roadshow in southern Texas, my team and I demonstrated the Foxhound to drug enforcement units, and it accurately detected all the samples from their evidence storage," said Jim Ryan, CEO of Viken Detection. "The officers were not only impressed by the Foxhound precision and simplicity but also Viken’s priority for their safety while simultaneously broadening the scope of drug detection applications."

The Foxhound is contributing to the fight against drug trafficking beyond just detecting conventional drugs. Recently, the Foxhound played a crucial role in detecting fentanyl within popular online purchased vape pens that resulted in several teenagers being rushed to the emergency room. In another case, the Foxhound was instrumental in identifying drug money contaminated with meth.

"The Foxhound stands out not only for its safety, simple use, affordability, and expanded identification methods, but what really distinguishes it is the capacity to adapt to and grow with rapidly changing illicit drug chemistries through AI/ML," noted Dr. Hanh Lai, SVP and Foxhound creator. "Like our other products, Viken dedicates itself to ensuring that the purchase date marks the beginning of an enduring and productive relationship with our customers."
